For many people a fast heart beat is a waking nightmare. A constant reminder that something isn’t right.
I think of a fast heart beat (tachycardia) in less intense terms. I consider it a sign of stress and not death. Tachycardia (100 heart beats per minute or more) simply isn’t the killer you think it is.
This is an important topic to address because it’s a symptom that has likely affected you.
You see, when you get tachycardic, you imagine all sorts of horrific scenarios, many of which probably involve a sickness of some kind.
It’s one of the reasons why tachycardia scares so well, it makes you feel like your life could end at any moment. But tachycardia doesn’t always mean danger or damage.
How It Works
When you feel anxious you might assume that anxiety is the source of your symptoms. But, in fact, the culprit is stress.
Stress is designed for short bursts of energy, attention, and focus to help you avert injury or death. The trouble is that when your stress response is set off it can sometimes remain activated for long periods of time.
One reason for this could be that you’re sensitive to stress, which fires off strong emotional reactions that make it hard for you to recover from bouts of anxiety.
The result of being stress sensitive is that your body’s production of stress hormone (i.e., adrenaline and cortisol) can be elevated and have a major impact on your body.
Stress can increase the demand for blood (cardiac output), which makes the heart work harder, pump faster, and increase your heart rate as a result.
What does this look like in everyday life? Well, say that you’re sitting at your desk and get a quick twinge of chest pain and notice your pulse racing. It may not even be a lot, but just enough to make you worry about what it could mean. This is when you start questioning the health of your heart.
Your stress turns into worry, which causes anxiety. Now, your limbic system (emotional brain) kicks in and excites the nerves of your heart, so your heart speeds up even more. That’s “emotion based” tachycardia.
A strong emotional reaction can indeed cause tachycardia. It’s normal, and absent disease, isn’t dangerous.
Chances are that if you’ve had tachycardia you’ve sought medical attention for it. Maybe you did an EKG, blood tests, stress test, holter monitor, etc. Still, you stay scared. But you don’t have to be.
A Different View of Tachycardia
Think of it this way. Anxiety is an indicator of stress. Tachycardia is part of that stress signal. Where do you think all your worry, fear, and stress goes? It certainly doesn’t evaporate into the ether. Instead, those negative emotions are manifested in your body.
But that in no way means that your rapid heart beat is set to kill you. It just means that you’re affected by your emotional experiences. Stress and anxiety are charged, live wire, reactions to months or even years of internal strife. Your heart is reacting to that discord.
The other piece is that your past experience already tells you that a fast heart beat isn’t the killer you think it is. How many times have you experienced a rapid heart rate? And of those times how many ended in injury or death? None right?
So really what you’re dealing with is the anticipation of something awful happening and not with what is likely to happen.
That doesn’t mean that your fearful assumptions aren’t powerful. They can be strong.
This, however, doesn’t change the fact that stress triggers tachycardia in the same way, every time. It’s an old dog with no new tricks. The challenge is to learn how to sit with that reality and accept it when it’s happening.
That will take practice and a certain level of courage, but what’s the alternative?
If you haven’t gone to your doctor then go get screened. Twice if it makes you feel better. After that though, you need to get your mind focused on stress reduction and not anxiety symptoms.
Symptoms are a sign of something bigger that needs to be dealt with, they aren’t the source of your pain. And, most importantly, they can’t kill you.
Disclaimer
Although tachycardia can be caused by an emotional response to stress, your tachycardia should be evaluated medically.
Tachycardia can be related to serious medical conditions.

Hi Paul,
I will be turning 40 this year. I’ve been suffering from a high heat rate that I’ve noticed, for almost a year. My resting heart rate is usually between 85 and 100. During the day or when working or moving around, it goes up to about 120. I know that I have a lot of stress, anxiety and tension. My heart rate is really starting to worry me since it’s constant and seems to never be regular. I am REALLY afraid of dying and having a heart attack or stroke. My friend told me to start talking ubiquinol. He says that will help. I don’t currently have health insurance, so I’m trying to figure out a way to control it naturally without meds. I don’t run out of breath or get overly tired of I walk, ride my bike or things like that. My heart rate goes higher, but only to about 140.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Sandi

@kamara
Its because you have it in your mind all the time that’s the reason it makes you anxious but when you doing something that makes you busy and keep out your thoughts of your heart you won’t feet it racing or beating fast but when you focus to it it seems like its going fast.I know its annoying I don’t know why I can’t stop worrying/thinking of my heart 8 months has passed still in my mind every time I feel it racing I put my hand on my chest or checking my pulse
Paul Dooley says
Hey Sandi, I’m actually not familiar with ubiquinol. My understanding is that it is sometimes used by people with chronic illnesses. My usual recommendation for heart related anxiety is a medical check up, and if all checks out, then therapy. If therapy is not possible then you could try some of the tips I listed here: https://www.anxietyguru.net/how-to-stop-heart-palpitations/ — hope that helps!

I over drank booze over the weekend ( was my GF birthday party. I just turned 40 myself. and did a blood pressure-heart beat test. Was at 175, and had a racing heart… I took some medication and my rate came down. Anyway I know booze caused my high blood pressure, and all week this lead me to anxiety and being nervous… which as noted here increased my heart beat. Was 4 days after I drank, and I thought something was wrong with my heart ( when really all is in my head and bad negative thinking- which lead to anxiety – lead to rapid heart beat)
Anyway you are right, stress and anxiety is the main factor in rapid heartbeat. I realized that I wanst likely to have a heart attack or a stroke. I even wrote things down to calm me, like my mom and dad lived to their 80s etc. I realized all this was caused by my anxiety thinking I was going to die due to heart symptoms. I’m now trying not to think too much and be calm. I even wrote a list of 20+ things so far as to why i wont have a heart attack or a stroke. and this article really also helped me to calm, I even book marked it just in case I get nervous again when my heart rate increases.

I’ve notice that every time I have a big impression/emotion my heart starts to race, I get a tachycardia but I try quickly to calm down and eat a banana so my muscles relax and it eventually goes away. Today I found out my husband’s messenger(Facebook) messages the ones he erases but they’re still there(some of women I know) I knew there were the conversations he erased becaused I checked in mine and the ones I erased from people I don’t talk to anymore are there, so yeah girls I just found out “Facebook affairs” can be actually seen.. and of course I didn’t knew that until I started to wonder on his messenger so yeah all erased conversations since the day fb started are there, in another carpet, but they’re there. I just saw them but didn’t opened any because I know how I get. Well my question is can I die from a big emotion?? Thanks

I’ve just come across this and all of your replies have helped me understand how I’ve been feeling. Constantly checking my pulse and keeping a log in the notes on my phone along with times and how I feel so I can show the doc when I have my next appt. Have seen doc twice about it and been to a&e via ambulance once. When in a&e I had blood tests, ecg’s and chest x Ray and was told it was an infection and had antibiotics for 1 week. That was in August and now in November it’s been happening since mid september. Highest my bpm has been is 132, lowest 68. I smoke and the doctors haven’t even asked me if I do which I found off! Doc has said my heart rate is fine but they haven’t mentioned anything about it being anxiety related. I do Stanley have my hand on my chest, it feels like it’s burning sometimes but I Don’t think it’s actually happening when I think about it logically! I’m making mylsef like this but I’m not an anxious person so just unsure as to why it’s suddenly hit me like this. I’m 28. So glad to have found this article, thank you all for sharing your experiences!

I too have a rapid heart rate at times. It goes high when I worry about my health.I have had a EKG, blood tests ( I should say many!), ultrasound, Chest X Ray. All came out very normal. I still get very scared and heart rate goes high. Feel like a hypochondriac :(. It is so tough to explain to anyone. Everything was low when I had my child recently. But now, I have started to get worried again. I don’t know what are the techniques to calm down. Please let me know.

Hi all, I am a 34 year old mom of 2 small children. I had been having heart palpitations for about 3 months and this followed with a zingy buzzy feeling in my head. My heart rate was on average 85-95.I was completely stressed and freaked out. Googling did not help!! I was tested for hyperthyroidism and had an ECG and blood tests but all came back ok. Doc put me on beta blockers and anti anxiety tablets. None of these really helped.. But the GOOD news! I went to a Chiropractor about 2 weeks ago, he manipulated my neck and back and my hear rate went down to around 78 in a day or two! My buzziness is hardly noticeable and palpitations too. He reckons with 2 kids my system is over stressed and I have adrenal fatigue. He has given me breathing exercises to do when I’m stressed out. I would totally recommend a chiro to any stressed out person out there!!

I recently went through a miscarriage, a week ago, and it ended up being a partial miscarriage so the next day I ended up losing a lot of blood and the hospital ended up having to do a D&C. Well my experience in the hospital was scary for me not only bc I lost a lot of blood but also bc the heart monitors had gone off a few times and scared me really bad bc I thought something bad was going to happen to me. Well ever since I left the hospital, I have been stressing out and having anxiety over my heart beating to fast or to slow. And there’s a thing on my phone where you can check your heart rate, Mine usually ranges from 60-120ish, I’m 24 years old and I just don’t know how to handle all of this stress and anxiety over my heart rate. It’s to the point where I don’t wanna go anywhere or do anything around the house bc I know any kind of movement will make my heart rate go up. I never had any kind of problems with this til after my experience in the hospital and I just want it to go away and feel normal again and not have to worry about my heart rate from the time I wake up til the time I got to sleep 🙁

I AM LEARNING THAT THIS FEELING OF FEAR WITH THE HEART RACING IS NORMAL AND TO CONTROL IT BY BREATHING EXERCISES. IN ONE SENSE WHEN THE ADRENAL GLAND IS PUMPING, THIS IS WHEN OTHERS OVERCOME THIS AND ARE ABLE TO DO INCREDIBLE THINGS… LIKE A MOTHER LIFTING A CAR OFF OF PINNED CHILD. Von

Heather Eye. I had the EXACT same thing happen! Miscarriage, lost a lot of blood, high heart rate in the ER during miscarriage, etc. I went home and didn’t want to move because my heart rate would jump. I started checking it hundreds of times a day. I became scared to leave my house. It’s been over a year and I’m still suffering. Please don’t let yourself get like that!
Once you lose a lot of blood you become anemic and your heart pumps faster to compensate. It’s not dangerous, just scary.

Fast heart beating for about half an hour, once in six months or year, since twenty years. Did not take any medicine so far. Usually it happens when i have lot of gases due to irritable bowls linked gastrointestinal trouble, but some times (very less times) during stress together with gas ful intestines. All tests ok.
One of my friends has been advised by doctor to take Diltiazem120,but who did not take it & is continuing without medicine.

One thing i have longed to know, is acid reflux a cause of rapid heartrate or is it the other way round. In other words can anxiety be to blame for acid reflux problems or does reflux cause anxiety symptoms? I.e fast heartrate etc.

Ok guys let me tell you my story. In September I was perfectly normal…I led the most normal life anyone could. I was very active. 2 times since then I had a panic attack with a heart rate of 164 and 190. I went to three cardiologists, 7 different doctors and an EP who have all said this is anxiety. So yes…a fast rate is scary but if you have been to the Dr. Believe what they tell you!!!

I have the same problem. I have been dealing with this fear of heart beating fast for almost 1yr now. I went to the hospital with stomach pain & my heart went up to 140 because I was in pain & nervous, the nurse there told me that if my heart rate went up any higher that I could have a atroke. I started panicking & indeed my heart rate increased. After that hospital visit I have been having panick attacks & anxiety. I’ve gotten better, I didn’t want to move or do anything that would make my heart rate go up, I wasn’t able to work for a month, drive or move. Ive had many tests done and everything comes back normal doctors say its anxiety

Hi you’ll, my 27 yo son and 42 yo sis both have heart rates that are on the regular over 100bpm. Mine runs @ abt 70 until I get really stressed. I find them both constantly letting life’s stress control them and then on top of it they both smoke and drink soda (one caffeinated and one usually not) and they both worry a LOT. I have learned about breathing exercises and although I go through tons of stress the difference between myself and them is the way I eat, and I don’t smoke and I do NOT like soda. Maybe some of you who do those things can try some of the opposites like I do. I believe we can all control ourselves we just have to KNOW we can. I hope you all find peace and and blessings!!

I have been to dr and er several times with being told I’m ok and it’s anxiety or stress. I wake up sometimes like I did this morning with only 2 hours of sleep and I had a fast heart rate and irregular beats. I still right now after 12 hours I still have a fast rate. I just checked and it’s 98-107. It’s got to the point I’m scared to leave my home. Scared to move or anything physical. Its hard being a mother and being scared to play with your child bc of your heart. I am on metoprolol and it doesn’t work at all. Idk what to do anymore and this is ruining my life. I do have gerd which I thought was a part of the cause but not 100%. I have heard about taking a vitamin that may help but I’m a tota hypercondriac and I am just so scared to do anything. Hi guys. Im suffering also a rapid heartbeats for a month . It triggers after eating meal, waking up in the morning and sometimes just sitting and watching tv. But i manage to calm my self. First thing i do is get into my room. Clear my mind take a deep breath and try to relax. Thats what i do when this rapid heartbeats triggers. Dont get panicked. Im sure you can control it. Because the more you panicked the shorter of breathings you get. I advise. Just try to relax guys.

At times it goes up to 120-130-160 I’ve been to the ER, I got blood work on the heart, EKG, and chest x ray. All normal. I went to a cardiologist and he did a sonogram of the heart and stress test and he said normal. My blood pressure is high every time I go to the doctors and check it. I sometimes also get shortness of breath, chest pain, and left arm pain and every doctor tells me its anxiety and not to worry but I do worry!!! I always check my heart beat and even when I dont check it I see it beating fast and feel it. 🙁

I feel like I found a family here. I have suffered off and on all my life (41 now) with anxiety and OCD. Mainly worries about heart. I have been off meds for a few years and doing very well, exercising, eating well, having check ups and have had lots of heart tests. But lately the past year I had a lot of issues with my kiddo and then Father was sick. I was great under the pressure but not now. Now my issues have come back. I just lost a cat and one is in the hospital fighting for its life, my daughter is leaving for camp, and I’m supposed to be going on my first flight in 12 years in the morning. I am doing all the things I’m supposed to like meditate (prob not enough) and when I exercise I feel better but the mornings are the worst. I’m laying here now with ear pain (thinking it’s my heart) and just nervous and shakey. My normal resting rate was in low 70s and it been going up past two days. I’m now obsessed with my fit bit and exercising. Exercising seems to bring it down. I just want to sleep, be at peace and enjoy life with my new husband and all our blessings. This is such a hard thing to deal with. I pray for us all. There are no support groups here. I am going to try and start one when we get back. Anyone can reach me also jenniferweaver2207@yahoo.com. The one thing I hate about anxiety/panic attacks is the sinus tachycardia you get. I don’t take meds anymore they help you but can hurt you as well. I have good days and bad days. These last couple of days have been rough I lost my job and will be starting a new one soon. I think that set it off and maybe a couple of other things. It starts with a fast hear beat shaking shortness of breath and omg I get the face numbness as well. Sometimes last 10-15 min the panic attack, same here I’m deathly scared of heart attack stroke etc.

Hello everyone, my name is Christopher i’m 22 years old and I’ve suffered from anxiety since I was in my early teens. I’ve had several *life threating* events that’s happened to me in my lifetime. I was in a car accident, I’ve been stabbed in the arm at a fueling station and I almost drowned at a early age. I feel that my anxiety is mostly under control except when I’m in a doctors office or medical facility because I am always anxious about seeing the doctor. I’m also scared to be around the town where I got stabbed at because I *don’t feel safe*. I exercise a decent amount and am at a healthy weight of 160 lbs at 5ft9. I just can’t control my anxiety when I am at a doctors office because I fear needles and getting my blood pressure checked, I don’t know why I feel this way it just happens so sudden. Its weird that I feel fine everywhere else, my blood pressure/heart rate is always normal at home, on the road etc.. but it shoots up like a rocket at a doctors office. Mentally I am scared from the life threating events that’s happened to me before and I can only imagine that’s whats caused my anxiety to worsen. I sympathize with all you because I know exactly what you’re going through. Hope we can all recuperate.

Hi. Both my mother and I have suffered from rapid heart beat for years. (My mother longer than I!) I’ve had all the tests and eventually, having done every test there is, ended up going to a naturopathic doctor who has helped me a great deal with health related issues that I’d been trying to get a handle on for years. She did give me a naturopathic herbal pill that I take when I’m about to be stressed out – like many, long trips to the dentist. This natural mediation, called “tran -Q” has helped me a great deal, as has more frequent nature walks and finding a time to be calm. Some times I don’t have to take any, other times I take 2 or 3 a day. The maximum is 6 a day, but I’ve never had to take more than 3 a day. Now, the only time I’m getting the rapid heart rate is sometimes when I’m on the toilet. I haven’t figured that one out yet, but I’m working on it.
Keep finding out more about your own body. Research, check out the naturopathic doctors too, and do whatever you need to do to keep healthy. After all, it’s your body!

Hello all! I am 27 years old, and was once a promotional model and a fun loving girl. Now I can barely socialize and if I force myself to go out then I’m nervous something will happen during that time. Last year, my dad passed away and my body went into shut down mode. I’m talking- such bad acid reflux that it splashed into my larynx and I can only have smoothies for the past year, numbness in legs and feet. And random fast heart rate. My resting BPM is 85-100. Just left my moms house and RANDOMLY heart rate started pounding. Had to go back and mom said I have a BPM of over 135. This happens about once a week. Doctors all say I’m fine and its anxiety but I feel like I’m being pushed off. Should I recommend beta blockers or am I too young? Reading this thread it sounds like people get high heart rates super randomly too, even at rest. Wasn’t sure how normal this was because I have other friends who have anxiety but don’t have a random fast heart rate and chest pain like I do. You can email me at melodyeparks@gmail.com with your stories and any coping mechanisms and your opinions. Thanks guys!

Hi everyone I suffer with anxiety have done for many years over the last 3 months been to A&E 3 times with rapid heart beat last one was 225bpm had to have 3 cardioversions to get it back to normal (not nice)now without scaring people you need to understand if you regularly get fast heart beat 150+ this increases your risk of blood clots which in turn puts you at high risk of a stroke so anyone who suffers with rapid heart rate should see a doctor to rule out this risk.

Anxiety mimics a heart attack. I suffer from high blood pressure and just recently went to the ER for an awful experience which it felt like a heart attack or a stroke. All test came back normal, my BP was actually in good shape. Diagnosis Anxiety attack. I’m under a psychiatric care for anxiety, it has saved my life. I take my BP meds in the morning, one antidepressants at bed time, feel 1000 better. It has saved my life, I’m only 38. Look for medical help. Anxiety feels harmless bit is not.
