No, really, I had a panic attack. After a couple of years of not having a major one, here is what I learned. The first thing that struck me about this particular panic attack was the ferocity - I mean this thing was big. Like a tsunami wave looming over me, I could feel it coming. But, despite it's rapid onset, I never had the feeling that I would die or go crazy. In the past death and insanity were the two main things I was waiting for. In this case, I was just waiting for it to die down and that took about ten minutes. In a strange way
Getting the Paranoia Out of Your Head (podcast)
Typically when people think of anxiety or anxiety disorder they don't think about paranoia at the same time. But if your anxiety has been severe enough for a prolonged period of time you can certainly develop mild to moderate forms of paranoid thinking. Today's podcast is about telling you what that means and how to stop it. First though, I want to point out that just because you have paranoid thoughts this does not in any way make you crazy. Instead, being paranoid is more a symptom of being wrapped up in your thoughts and concerns. It's
How to Prevent Anxiety From Ruining Your Relationships
If you've lived with anxiety for any significant amount of time you have probably felt misunderstood on more than one occasion. You may have felt as though no one gets what you're going through and everyone around you doesn't seem to know how to help. We all have real basic needs and I don't mean just food and shelter. I also mean things like security, friendship, self esteem, and a sense of
Can Herbs Cure Anxiety? (podcast)
On today's podcast I explore whether or not herbs can make you better and how anxiety is always mind screwing you. In this podcast I survey herbs like Valerian, St. John's Wort, Lavender tea, and Marijuana. There are of course tons more herbs we could talk about, but I picked these because they are easy to find and easy to find information on. The whole idea behind this podcast was to give you a cursory introduction to these herbs - including their benefits and drawbacks. On a side note, somebody recently asked me why I don't make

AnxietyGuru.net Turns 2 Years Old!
Today marks the second anniversary of Anxietyguru.net. Since May 2008 I have been writing, podcasting, emailing readers, and doing all I can to spread my message. My message has always been simple. Anxiety is hard to live with but, it is manageable and does not have to stop you from living how you want to live. I've always preached that the path toward a less anxious life may or may not require meds, therapy, fish oil or whatever other means you can imagine. My motto is "whatever it takes, as long as it is safe and effective." Last
How I Beat My Worst Anxiety Phobia: I Got Drunk
The other day we had several people over for barbecue and good times, but before the soiree took place I vowed to do two things - 1. Get drunk and 2. Be alright with being drunk. Usually I'd tell you that alcohol and anxiety just don't mix, and I think this is still the case. Lots of people use alcohol to cope with anxiety but inevitably this leads to alcohol dependence and - ironically - more anxiety. So it really is a non-starter. But this post isn't a celebration of alcohol or alcohol influenced text messages (of which I indulged in

According to a new study in the Journal Depression and Anxiety the answer is no. Massage is not better than deep breathing or other commonly used techniques to reduce anxiety. But my question is: Is that really a surprise? When feeling anxious the last thing I want is a rub down. Massages usually require close contact with a stranger and stillness - and I have both in very short supply when I'm jazzed on anxiety. Theoretically, I could see why getting a massage would seem soothing - and it could be - but I think that it's more likely to
