Today I’m going to talk about myself.
I never talk about myself, really. I suppose that I don’t because this blog is about helping you. But I want to tell you about how helping you has changed my life.
In 1999 I started a new phase in my life, namely an anxious phase. In 2006 I started dabbling in research about how to help myself. By that point I’d gone through therapy, rejected meds, and was confused as ever.
By 2008 I had made a lot of progress in terms of understanding what was wrong with me and how I could fix it. That’s around the same time that I launched Anxiety Guru Dot Net.
When I started the healing process I thought I was doing pretty good. My anxiety was down, panic was rare, and so I started writing. The process of doing all that research helped me immensely.
The truth is that the process of writing about everything I had learned, writing my Special Report, and everything else I’d done related to this site, is what changed me forever. Changed me for the better.
I feel ridiculously happy that I’m nowhere near the man I was in 1999, so blessed to be at peace with myself. But, given all that, I still continue my work here. And I’ve decided to take this journey to the next level. To be reborn in a way.
See, anxiety wounded me in a profound way. That’s why I’m passionate about leading others away from being anxious and afraid for their lives. So to do this properly I’ve decided to go back to school.
I was going to wait to share this with you all because I haven’t been accepted into any school yet, but many of you have been with me for so long that I just felt like I needed to tell you.
I recently applied for entry into a Masters level Counseling Psychology Program. If I am accepted, and if I complete it successfully, I would become a Licensed Clinical Therapist.
The thing is, despite the fact that I feel “healed,” I’ve never forgotten what it feels like to be in a panic or worried about my health and so on. That memory I think will always be with me.
For privacy reasons I’m not going to share what school and all, but if accepted I think it’s going to change a lot of things. I feel like becoming a counselor is what I was meant to do.
I earned my bachelors degree in 2004 and since then I’ve worked in descent jobs, for respectable organizations. And that paid the bills, but it also left me wondering: Can I do more? Can I make a difference in the lives of a few? I think I can.
Wish me luck!

That’s wonderful news. You will be an AMAZING counselor. I’m married to a PhD student, and sometimes it’s a tough road to be a grad student. I totally respect and admire you for beginning the journey down this road. This truly is your calling.

Oh…and my other comment: I’ve been thinking about starting therapy myself. I’m feeling so much better than I was, but I have a few lingering symptoms I just want to get totally, completely resolved. I know counselors are trained in therapy (duh!), but I still worry they just won’t understand (here I go worrying again). I’m so glad to hear there are and will be counselors out there who go into BECAUSE they’ve experienced it.

Hi. Me. Again!! One totally unrelated question: I purchased Claire Weekes book (through your Amazon link) and LOVED it. I want to get her audio book. Is there somewhere to download it as an mp3? Somewhere legit that you pay for it, of course. But I’d rather download it than pay for the cd and shipping, when I’ll just stick it on my iPod…

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your support. That means a lot to me. Even if all goes well I know it will be a hard road, but well worth it.
@ Amy – I’ve never seen Dr. Weekes’s audio book on mp3, but if you did buy the CD you could download it to your itunes library and then on to your ipod. Kind of a pain, but seems like the only option available for now.

Hi, you can indeed purchase “Pass Through Panic” from iTunes or even Amazon. It’s an EXCELLENT audio book. Absolutely helped me in my recovery process. If I had to pick the 3 biggest things that helped, her work would be in the top 3 for sure. You can also get “Hope and Help for your Nerves” on a CD version, but it’s very difficult you have to order it from Australia and the site is extremely slow. I also recommend finding copies of her follow-up books “More help for your nerves” and “Peace from Nervous Suffering.” These are PACKED with what I’ll call bonus-material for lack of a better word. ๐ You can email me at worldchampsound at mac dot com if you need help tracking down the Hope and Help MP3. Be well!

Paul,
You don’t need luck because this is what you were born to do. You were meant to live thru panic because you now have first hand knowledge of the feeling all of us go through. You don’t need luck because you are going to be phenomenal Licensed Clinical Therapist, because you have built yourself the tools to succeed in this endeavor. What I love about people like you Paul, is you’re constantly searching to improve not only yourself but you’re looking for ways to bring everyone along with you. That is something I seek in the people I surround myself with. The world could use more guys and gals like you. Congrats on taking the next step…

Thanks Sunny. I appreciate your comment. I guess sometimes we have to go through something difficult to better help others. Maybe that isn’t the most efficient or pleasant way to do things, but at least when someone describes their anxiety symptoms I won’t have to imagine what they mean because I know. I do think that is a distinct advantage when trying to help someone see the way out of their anxiety maze.

Hey everyone,
I got accepted! I am officially a graduate student. I’m on my way to ridding the planet Earth of anxiety, or at least in a few people. Thank you for all the support.

Way to go, Paul!
You’ve really got a chance to make a difference in the understanding of a highly misunderstood disorder.
The medical community will be lucky to have someone like you.
