Being an anxious person is a shocking experience.
No part of becoming or staying anxious is easy. A lot of that has to do with the huge amount of change that you undergo when your life is turned upside down by anxiety.
Everything suddenly becomes about what you should or shouldn’t do to avoid being anxious, or about how anxiety is going to tear down your health or make you go crazy. Hard change, indeed.
Facing change of any kind can be hard on anybody, but for you it’s a monumental struggle. Anxiety causes you to live in a constant state of uncertainty and fear.
But just because you are facing difficult change(s) in your life doesn’t mean that you have to surrender to your fears regarding that change. Actually, you can do a lot to adjust your thinking about many situations, so that you can move forward with your life.
It’s about changing how you think and staying in hot pursuit of what makes you happy that makes the difference.
This whole issue of adapting to change caught my attention recently because I had an opportunity to read an interesting book called Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life.
It deals with how you can effectively handle change and how altering your beliefs, at least about some things, can make it much easier to deal with the difficulties you face on a daily basis.
Right now I’m going through a lot of change myself. I’ve just been accepted into a graduate psychology program, I’m moving, and I’m taking an accelerated prerequisite course. That’s on top of my job, being a dad, and a husband. No easy thing!
But, instead of over-analyzing my situation, I just keep moving forward. I stay in hot pursuit of my dreams and goals and don’t allow myself time to ponder things that won’t allow my dreams to come true.
I’ll admit that learning to move forward in the face of change is no easy task. But it can be done.
To help me explain my thoughts on this topic I put together a podcast. In it, I try to explain how I “got over” anxiety and what ways work best to handle change, good or bad.
I hope you enjoy it! Press play to listen now.
