You ever wondered why CNN or Fox News never talk about anxiety disorders? I guess anxiety is not as “sexy” as personality disorders. Whatever the reason there is news out there that effects those of us that have anxiety disorders. From time to time I like to bring you some of those stories. Today I wanted to share a little anxiety news buffet for your reading pleasure.
1. Norwegian researchers have evaluated data of over 35,000 people over a period of 11 years. The data revealed that over the long term people with anxiety and depression had lower rates of high blood pressure. The researchers acknowledge that this flies in the face of conventional wisdom but also argued that previous studies of the same kind were flawed.
2. In Australia during the 2006-2007 fiscal year over 10 million hospital visits were made by people that needed help with some form of mental disorder. Most common among these were depression and anxiety.
3. Bestofneworleans reports that there are still thousands of residents of New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Many residents are still fighting PTSD and depression and are increasingly turning to drugs to cope.
4. Writer Daniel Gardner has a new book out called The Science of Fear. In the book Gardner argues that although people are more afraid than ever they actually are safer than at any other time in history. Gardner also argues that political marketing and the media are largely responsible for this trend.
5. A new study from Australia suggest that kids that are scared of roller coasters and scary movies may be prone to anxiety. Read more here.
