Do you think that OCD is funny? Well as many of you know there is a television program called Monk and they think it’s hilarious. When I say they I don’t just mean the producers, but people all over the country. The show is funny, but I wonder what OCD sufferers really think? According to an article on healthplace.com the executive director of the Obsessive-Complusive Foundation (she has OCD) thinks the show is a riot. If you have OCD do you think that the show is funny? Should mental illness be made fun of? My short answer is yea.
Don’t get me wrong, potentially debilitating conditions of any kind are not funny in real life, but it’s depiction in media can be funny. When you have OCD, social anxiety disorder, etc, things can get bleak and you can start to feel alone and unhappy. That’s why humor can lighten up your mood and your perception of ‘what you got’. This isn’t the first time that Hollywood has dealt with this issue either. The list below is just a taste of films that star fictional characters with the shakes.
Repulsion
Analyze This and Analyze that
High Anxiety
Panic 2000
Copycat – agoraphobia
What about Bob?
Phobia (1980)
The Odd Couple – OCD
The Aviator – OCD
so on and so on…..
Clearly, this is a popular topic! So even if you got OCD or whatever nervous condition remember that laughing is good and that there are plenty of films and shows with people like you ( or at least that act like you) to help you keep an entertained look on your face.
Emily says
As someone with OCD, I agree that shows about the disorder can be funny. That being said, I wish sometimes it was more accurately portrayed. Not all OCD sufferers have their ticks manifest in obsessive cleanliness or germophobia. Mine, for instance, is irrational thoughts about certain objects, and trichotillomania (obsessive hair pulling).
